Immediate hypersensitivity reactions are immune-mediated reactions to proteins and responsible for symptoms of allergic rhinitis, food allergy, and anaphylaxis. Immediate hypersensitivities are mediated by allergic IgE antibodies that inappropriately recognize a foreign protein as immunogenic. To test for the presence of IgE antibodies, a skin prick test is used. However, false positive skin prick occurs due to aggressive pricking/ manipulation of the skin with a skin prick device.
A commonality among the current skin prick devices on the market, is that the sharp point is exposed and requires that the user to apply a force to the skin to disrupt the skin barrier using the sharp points. Additionally, certain patient populations are often fearful of skin testing devices because of visible, exposed sharp points. Due to this, it has become clear for the need of a device that can reduce inter-operator variability and/or anxiety among patients.
